The United States Olympic Committee has lesson plans and downloads for Olympians in Life, an ongoing education program for grades K-12. You must register (free) to use the education site. The USOC’s website needs a bit of updating for Beijing 2008, but there’s some good info here.

The Olympic Flame, or Olympic Fire, is a symbol of the Olympic Games. Its origins lie in ancient Greece, when a fire was kept burning throughout the celebration of the ancient Olympics. The fire was reintroduced at the Olympics in 1928, and it has been part of the modern Olympic Games ever since. The Olympic Games endured at Olympia for over 1,000 years before the rise of Christianity consigned them to history until the first modern games were held in Athens in 1896.
