Ahhhh…Public School. An elective class I took in public high school was Calligraphy. On the first day the teacher asked if anyone was lefthanded. Only two people raised their hands. One of them was me. The teacher spoke to the other lefty and ignored me. Given my supply list, my mom & I went shopping after school. She bought something like this Speedball Set and ink. Even though my paper constantly smeared with ink and my lettering spotty, it took a few classes before the teacher realized I was lefthanded. Then it was back to the art supply store for a few lefthanded calligraphy nibs. The art supply store would not take back the pens we already bought & used nor would the teacher pay for the pens. It was difficult to find a comfortable way of holding the pen and paper so I just held my hand over the paper and went through twice as many pieces of paper to do my lettering. The teacher did not spend more time with me to show me different ways of lefthanded calligraphy. I don’t remember what grade I ended up getting in class, but I’m sure it wasn’t an A.
