			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The <a href="http://www.strategies.org/" target="_blank">Institute for Global Environmental Strategies</a> is sponsoring an <a href="http://www.strategies.org/EarthDayPhoto" target="_blank">Earth Day photo contest</a> for middle school students. Interested students are asked to photograph something that is changing in their local environment. They are to take the photo between Tuesday, April 22, and Tuesday, April 29. The change could be occurring in the student&#8217;s backyard, outside the student&#8217;s school, in a local park or even off in the distance. Participants must research and write an explanation of the change documented in the photograph.</p>
<p>The contest is open to all U.S. students in grades 5-8.</p>
<p>Entries must be received by e-mail or postmarked by May 9, 2008.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Each year, The History Channel recognizes and rewards teachers and students who demonstrate an exceptional commitment to exploring and preserving their local history with the <a href="http://www.history.com/minisite.do?content_type=Minisite_Generic&#038;content_type_id=52156&#038;display_order=4&#038;mini_id=51103" target="_blank">Save Our History National Event</a>. This is open to homeschoolers. The History Channel created <a href="http://www.history.com/minisite.do?content_type=Minisite_Generic&#038;content_type_id=51120&#038;display_order=1&#038;mini_id=51103" target="_blank">Save Our History</a> to support local history education and historic preservation efforts in communities across America. Since launching the Save Our History Program in 2004, The History Channel has distributed over 100,000 Educator&#8217;s Manuals, reaching over 2.5 million students and has awarded $750,000 in grants to eighty-two historical organizations nationwide, funding hands-on educational projects that teach students about their local history and actively engage them in its preservation. Save Our History instills a sense of community pride in students and teachers. Applications are due in April but check back on their website for more info.</p>

The <a href="http://holocaust.hklaw.com/" target="_blank">Holocaust Remembrance Project</a> is a national essay contest for high school students that is designed to encourage and promote the study of the Holocaust. Participation in this project encourages students to think responsibly, be aware of world conditions that undermine human dignity, and make decisions that promote the respect and value inherent in every person.<br />
<a href="http://holocaust.hklaw.com/2008/index.asp" target="_blank">Homeschoolers are eligible</a>. (I emailed them in 2005 and asked. Now it specifically states on their website that homeschoolers are eligible!) Entry deadline is April 30, 2008.<br />

<p>Signet Classics is proud to host its twelfth annual Signet Classics Student Scholarship Essay Contest, in which five high school juniors or seniors can each win a $1,000 scholarship award to be used toward their higher education plus a Signet Classics library for their school! Students enter by writing an essay on one of four topics posed for this year’s competition book, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson.<br />
Entrant must be a full-time matriculated student in the eleventh or twelfth grade at time of entry or between the ages of 16-18 if home-schooled. Home-schooled students: Essays must be mailed by a parent or legal guardian on behalf of the student, along with a cover letter on the parent/legal guardian&#8217;s letterhead that certifies that the student is home-schooled and that includes the following details:</p>
<ul>
<li>Date</li>
<li>Student&#8217;s full name, grade, address, e-mail and home telephone number</li>
<li>Student&#8217;s equivalent grade</li>
<li>Topic selected (#1, #2, #3 or #4)</li>
<li>Certification by sponsoring parent for home-schooled student that the essay is the student&#8217;s original work</li>
</ul>
<p>Essays submitted without a cover letter on parent/legal guardian&#8217;s letterhead or cover letters that do not include the above details will be disqualified. All entries must be postmarked by April 15, 2008 and received on or by April 22, 2008.</p>
