Of all the traditional Chinese festivals, the new Year was perhaps the most elaborate, colorful, and important. This was a time for the Chinese to congratulate each other and themselves on having passed through another year, a time to finish out the old, and to welcome in the new year. Common expressions heard at this time are: GUONIAN to have made it through the old year, and BAINIAN to congratulate the new year.

Mardi Gras is French for “Fat Tuesday”. The name comes from the ancient custom of parading a fat ox through Paris on this day. The ox was to remind the people that they were not allowed to eat meat during Lent. Lent runs from Ash Wednesday thru Easter Sunday. Mardi Gras moves. It can be anywhere between February 3rd and March 9th. The date depends on when Easter falls. The official colors for Mardi Gras are purple, green, and gold. These colors were chosen in 1872 by the King of Carnival, Rex. He chose these colors to stand for the following: Purple represents justice, green stands for faith, and gold stands for power. Make a King Cake Game & Dice. Try these delicious vegan versions of traditional New Orleans favorites like jambalaya and dirty rice.

It’s vegetarian, has no trans fats, is whole grain and low in sodium (20mg per serving). Plus it has the UDSA Organic symbol on the box. Nature’s Path also has a great looking Granola Strawberry Parfait recipe that I hope to try this weekend. It calls for ricotta, yogurt and strawberry jam but I think I’ll swap that out for vegan versions of ricotta and yogurt, and real strawberries.
