Craft Items To Make With Your Child

Sidewalk Chalk

Materials:
2 cups water
2 cups plaster of Paris
2 tablespoons wet or dry tempera paint
toilet paper tubes
duct tape

Method:
Use duct tape to cover one end of each toilet paper tube. Mix all materials and set aside for 5 minutes. Line a cookie sheet with wax paper or foil. Place tubes upright on paper with open end facing up. You might want to tape the tubes upright onto the wax paper or foil to make it more steady. Pour mixture into holders. Leave standing until chalk mixture is almost firm. Rip off the toilet paper tubes and let the sidewalk chalk dry for about 2 more hours.

 

Eggshell Sidewalk Chalk

Materials:
4-5 eggshells
1 teaspoon flour
1 teaspoon very hot tap water
food coloring (optional)

Method:
Wash and dry eggshells, put in a bowl and grind into powder. Throw out any large pieces. Pour flour, hot water and 1 tablespoon of eggshell powder in another bowl. Mix until mixture looks like paste. Add food coloring now if you’d like. Shape and press the paste into the shape of chalk sticks. Roll up tightly in a strip of paper towel and allow to dry for about three days. Note: This chalk is only good for sidewalks.

 

Gak-like stuff

Materials:
2 cups white glue
1 ½ cups warm water
1 tablespoon borax
another 1 cup warm water
food coloring or tempera paint

Method:
Combine 2 cups of white glue and 1 ½ cups of warm water. Add a little food coloring or tempera paint to achieve the color you want. Set to one side. In a separate bowl, combine 1 cup warm water and 1 tablespoon of borax and mix well. Mix both bowls together. Mix well and then knead.

Warning: Do not get it into your hair, or onto your clothes. Store in a sealed container, in the refrigerator.

 

Play Dough / Salt Dough

Mix 1 cup flour, ½ cup salt and 2 tablespoons of cream of tartar. Set aside. In a saucepan over medium heat on stove, combine 1 cup of water, 2 teaspoon food coloring, 1 tablespoon oil and cook until boiling. Add dry materials and cook on low until dough starts to pull away from sides of the pan. Knead until cool. Store in a plastic container that is sealed.

 

Jell-O Play Dough

Ingredients:
1 cup white flour
1/2 cup salt
2 tablespoons cream of tartar
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 warm water
1 3-oz package Jell-O (any flavor)

Method:
Combine ingredients and cook over medium heat until it thickens and pulls away from the sides of pot and becomes dull. Note: It burns easily so don’t put over too high a heat and keep stirring. Mold and knead until cool enough to touch. Store in a closed plastic bag.

 

Slime

Add water to cornstarch until it is the consistency to hold its shape one minute and flow the next. Sort of like thick pudding. Add food coloring if desired.
