The Bracelet
Yoshiko Uchida’s The Bracelet is an exceptional book about friendship. During World War II, Emi, a young Japanese American girl, and her family are made to leave the lives they know and are sent to an internment camp. Her father is sent to an internment camp in Montana, while Emi, her sister and mother are sent to Utah. Emi has to leave behind her best friend Laurie who gives her a bracelet. Emi loses the bracelet. She learns that true friendships transcend material possessions.
I stumbled upon this book at my local bookstore. When I brought it home, I read it to my young daughter. It opened wonderful discussions about my own mother’s teen years. My mother’s family was one of many families sent to the internment camps.
Emi and 120,000 other Japanese Americans (80,000 of them citizens) were sent to detention centers due to their ethnic heritage by the U.S. government; their rights were abrogated.
