Juicing Apples vs Blending Apples

The farm stand I go to is getting ready to close for the season. Halloween will be their last day open. I stopped in to see what they still have so I can keep using their produce. I purchased a box of apples that are “seconds”. Some parts of the apple look bad, while others look good. I am in the process of freezing them to use throughout the winter in juices and smoothies. My daughter and I are cutting up the apples with an apple corer, giving them a bath in lemon juice (we are using lemons, not bottled lemon juice), setting them on wax paper and putting them in the freezer for a couple of hours and finally putting them in freezer bags.

This morning I was curious about the output for apples using my Omega Vert 350 Juicer versus my Vitamix. I washed 6 apples and juiced 3 of them and vitamixed the other 3.

How I use the word Vitamixed. Vitamixed: verb. To mix, blend, pulverize, emulsify, etc., in a Vitamix.

The juiced apples output was about 1 cup of fresh apple juice. It also produced approximately 1-inch of foam at the top. The juice was delicious and I polished that off in no time at all.

The blended apples output was also about 1 cup. There is no ice or water in the vitamixed version. It tasted like apple butter, 100 times better than those little packs of apple butter at a restaurant that is usually kept by the jelly. I have no gluten free bread at home or else I’d have the apple butter with cashew butter on a tortilla roll-up. The apple butter was used in this morning’s smoothie.

Um, yum!! I have never thought about blending apples to add to things, even though I LOVE apples! Can’t wait to try some new recipes!

Oh I love this… and oh how it makes me miss my Vitamix! I actually gave it away because I was not using it… but I have since taken up juicing and just bought produce last night to juice this morning! (Apples, Carrots, Ginger, Beet, Celery, and Spinach!) I will be back (after October… because, 31 days!) and enjoy reading through your series! Thanks for the added inspiration to actually get back to juicing!

What a gift someone received from you! The Vitamix can be a counter hog. I’ve seen the newer 7500 models that are shorter with a wider container. Those are supposed to fit under the cabinets better while sitting on your counter top.

So I’ve never juiced anything but one of my boys’ favorite Curious George episodes is about making your own juice and ever since the first (of way too many) times I’ve seen it I have always wanted to try it! Are there any lower cost juicer that you’d recommend for someone not as dedicated?

    • Jodi Robertson

Hi Sarah, I cannot make any recommendations but I can point you to discountjuicers.com where you can research juicers that may meet your price point. Also, a great group on Facebook is Juicer Nation. Members have all different kinds of juicers and are at different levels of juicing. Many people have a Nutribullet and enjoy them. My only experience with that brand was a very watery juice from a “juice bar” (it claimed to be one but I don’t think so – that’s the topic for another post). It might be interesting to do a poll at that group to see what people use. I did see that Suja, which is a brand of pre bottled juice, will be carried at Targets. I think they cost less than $4.00/bottle. Before I became more dedicated to my juicer, I could only find Suja at Whole Foods Market. I would keep an eye out at your nearby resale shops too In case any are donated. You can try a brand cheaper and then re-donate and use as tax write off if you’re not happy with it.

How interesting. I thought you’d get more with the vitamixed apples. (I also like how you used vitamixed as a verb.)

I thought I would too and that surprised me. I think if I try an experiment like this again, it will be with carrots. Last time I juiced carrots, I was disappointed how little juice there was.i now understand why there are such huge bags of carrots at Costco and Whole Foods that aren’t meant for deer, lol!
