Simple DIY Snack Ideas
Originally shared in 1996, this post has been reworked to reflect current context while keeping the focus on simple, homemade snacks that can be adapted to your family’s needs.
Easy Homemade Dip Ideas
You can make a quick savory dip using plain yogurt, sour cream, or a dairy-free alternative. Instead of a packaged onion soup mix, a simple all-purpose seasoning works well. I often use a no-salt seasoning blend (such as Costco’s Kirkland Signature Organic No-Salt Seasoning) and adjust to taste. This keeps things simple, affordable, and flexible based on what you already have.
Homemade Onion Soup Mix
Ingredients:
- Dried onion flakes or onion powder
- Garlic powder
- Salt
- Black pepper
How to use it:
Mix plain yogurt, sour cream, or a dairy-free alternative with:
- 1/2-1 tsp onion flakes or onion powder
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder
- A pinch of salt and pepper
Stir, taste, and adjust.
This gives you the spirit of onion dip without packets, gluten, or extra cost.
Flavoring Yogurt at Home
Plain yogurt can be flavored at home using fresh fruit and simple add-ins. Chopped fruit, mashed berries, or a spoonful of unsweetened applesauce can add natural sweetness without overwhelming the yogurt. Spices like cinnamon or vanilla are an easy way to add flavor with minimal effort. Experiment with combinations to find what works best for your household.
A few dairy-free yogurt options I like:
- Forager Project-Unsweetened Cashew Coconut Yogurt
- So Delicious-Unsweetened Plain Coconutmilk Yogurt
- Cocojune-Pure Coconut Yogurt
